a little about a guy named Jesus…
Jesus was born many years ago in a manger, not the most wonderful of places to be born. It was lonely, unclean, and humble, but somehow beautiful within all of these. It was the best setting for a man whose life would be much like the characteristics of his manger.
Jesus grew up in a regular Jewish family, observing the laws and requirements for Jews, much like people in religious circles today. He was a normal boy,
loving sports, wondering what it was about girls that made him smile, and making his parents upset when he wasn’t home in time for supper. However there was something
distinctly different
about him. He understood at a young age the laws of the Jews and their meanings beyond what many of the religious gurus understood.
This understanding would make life quite lonely for Jesus.
He spent most of his life wandering from town to town speaking to the average Joe about his understanding and
living it out in his life.
He had no place to call home, he had no wife, and he had no money. The only friends he had were the people who believed what he said and lived.
His friends would make him unclean.
What that meant back then was that Jesus hung around people that the church institution considered unworthy:
nerds, sluts and players, those in debt, gays, the overweight and underweight, the successfully empty, people in unsatisfying relationships, and those who simply ask -
“Is this as good as it gets?”
He hung around people like this because
he saw the sadness and desire in their eyes.
He had compassion for them and loved them deeply.
He had healing power in his teachings and in his touch that could cure people of their diseases, habituations, and hurts.
You would probably think this would make him very conceited and arrogant, but instead it made him humble.
In fact, he was so humble that some people questioned his
authenticity.
However, even when he tried to prove it to them by healing someone, they disliked him even more.
This drove the popular people of the day to kill him.
They didn’t care how he died, as long as he did. They killed him by use of a cross, the popular form of death in those days. He suffocated to death hanging on it.
But there was something beautiful that happened.
Three days after he died, he walked out of his grave,
alive again.
Many people saw him, but for the people that didn’t, this was hard for them to swallow.
How does a man cheat death?
If he can do it, why can’t I?
And this is the truth today: because Jesus did overcome death, so can we.
He lived to do this for us. And not only so we can overcome death, but also
live a life that’s worth living - now.
If you're wondering why, please know that it is because he is God. Hard to swallow, but true. Who else could cheat death than the one who started life? And because he is God, he has the power to fill your life full of
passion and adventure.
